Zach Riffett Earns AE Player of the Week Honors

TSC Alumni Alex Dawson is SCAC player of the weekBOSTON - Senior goalkeeper Zach Riffett (Brenham, Texas) has earned America East Player of the Week honors following an impressive week where Riffett and the No. 23 Boston University men’s soccer team (4-0-2) posted a 1-0-1 record at the Penn State Nike Classic. Riffett posted his second shutout of the season against Ohio State after stopping eight first-half shots, and held Penn State scoreless through the first 66 minutes of the match.

In BU’s 1-0 win over Ohio State, Riffett stopped two point-blank shots in the first half to preserve the tie. The senior netminder went on to stop eight shots in the half en route to the Terriers third consecutive shutout. In BU’s 1-1 tie with Penn State, Riffett made six saves, including two in the second overtime period. The Texas native was named to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament team, following the final game of the tournament.

Riffett currently owns an impressive 0.45 goals-against-average and .917 save percentage in 595:46 minutes of action. The senior has started every game for the Terriers, while allowing only three goals.

Boston University is currently ranked 23rd in the nation by the National Coaches Association of America and third in the Northeast Region.

BU returns to action when it takes on Brown University on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at Nickerson Field.

Texans Alumni Named Player-of-the-Week

TSC Alumni Alex Dawson is SCAC player of the weekALEX DAWSON OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a first-year forward from Spring, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4.

Dawson scored a pair of goals and had an assist in Austin College’s two wins over Mary Hardin-Baylor and McMurry to begin the season. Dawson scored in the second half of a 3-0 win over UMHB and assisted on the game winner versus McMurry. Dawson added a tally of his own to seal the victory at McMurry.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:

Sophomore forward German Gomez (TSC Texans alumni) of Trinity helped the Tigers to two wins to open the 2006 season, defeating Hardin-Simmons and UT-Tyler 5-2 and 5-1, respectively. Gomez sealed the win over UT-Tyler with back-to-back second half goals off the bench. With Trinity clinging to a 2-1 lead, Gomez’s 58th and 64th minute goals put the game out of reach. Junior forward Nick Judah of Centre started where he left off last season, scoring in each half to help lead the Colonels to an opening 3-0 win over visiting Hanover College. Judah, who finished with a team-leading nine goals last season, scored in the 20th minute off a near-post blast and in the 53rd minute on a break-away. Senior forward Nick Noel of DePauw scored two goals and assisted on the other in the Tigers' 3-1 win over Alma. Senior forward Lauro Davalos of Southwestern played a major role in the Pirates offense in their first two games of the season as Southwestern split games against UT-Tyler and Hardin-Simmons. Davalos assisted both of the Pirate goals in the 4-2 loss to Texas-Tyler. The next day, the Pirates faced off against Hardin-Simmons and Davalos helped get things rolling with an assist at 21:23, giving SU its first lead of the season. Later, with less than five minutes to play, Davalos fed Cory Fujimoto for the game-winner and his fourth assist in two games. Junior midfielder Nick Forsten (TSC Texans alumni) of Hendrix had one goal on six shots (four on goal) in the Warriors' season-opening win over Louisiana College, 2-1. Austin, Millsaps, Oglethorpe, Rhodes and Sewanee did not nominate anyone for the award.
